Former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People's Democratic Party (nPDP) and APC chieftain Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze has described Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's declaration of interest in the 2023 presidential election as an act of careless perfidy and deliberate embarrassment to the Nigerian public's sensibilities.
Chief Eze said the Vice President's statement is a clear tale of treachery perpetrated against former Lagos Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a man whose political career has been built on demanding unctuous loyalty from his allies and who now feels wounded over the shabby betrayal of a Senior Advocate and confidant-turned-adversary, who rode to power on his large wings of political magnanimity.
Although every Nigerian adult who meets the constitutional requirements reserves the right to run for office, Eze, a member of the APC Legacy Project Media Team, stated that where such interest threatens public morality and falls below recognized standards of propriety and good taste, people of goodwill owe the public an obligation to bring such oddity to question for the public good.
After reading what he called the Vice President's "flimsy and watery reasons" for running for President in 2023, the party chief said he felt it was his "reasonable obligation" as a sane and morally upright Nigerian to warn the world that such a declaration smacks of very perceptible tincture of political infidelity against his all-time benefactor, Bola Tinubu, who has nurtured a lifelong aspiration for the presidency.
He based his arguments on the fact that Osinbajo's mentor, Senator Bola-Ahmed Tinubu, had already declared his interest, regardless of the shaky state of his campaign, and that as long as Osinbajo is a product of the APC's National Leader, it is immoral, unethical, and unacceptable for Vice President Osinbajo to offer himself to run against his boss, whose inputs in his political life need not be over.
Congratulating the ruling All Progressives Congress for zoning the party's Presidential slot to the country's southern region, Eze said the zoning arrangement was made with the knowledge that the South Western region of Nigeria, where Vice President Osinbanjo hails from, has had Chief Ernest Shonekan and General Olusegun Obasanjo presiding over Nigeria's affairs, and thus it is safe to conclude that the odds clearly favor the South-South and South-East whose turn it is.
By 2023, he will have served as Vice President from the same South West for eight years, he reminded Osinbajo. "Since the fourth Republic, the same zone has inhabited the Speakership of this country for over eight years through Hon. Patricia Etteh and Hon. Dimeji Bankole from 2007 to 2011, with the current Speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, serving for four years by 2023," he stated.
“With this development, considering the fact that South East region has not since the inception of the 4th Republic occupied the seat of the President or Vice President of this country and considering that the South-South region has only through Dr. Jonathan Goodluck occupied the exalted office for only five years, it will be immoral and unacceptable that Osinbajo or any other aspirant from the South West would be contemplating of getting the party’s flag for the Presidency against the South East and South-South regions of this country in 2023."
He claimed that by making this declaration, Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo has demonstrated that he cannot be trusted with the office of President of Nigeria, having caused serious embarrassment to the Presidency on several occasions by attempting to overturn President Muhammadu Buhari's stand, particularly when the President entrusted power to him while on vacation or receiving medical treatment outside the country.
Furthermore, Eze stated that Osinbajo presided over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting where Nigerians were denied approval of security surveillance devices that would have prevented the deaths of eight Nigerians, as well as many others who were injured and are still being held by terrorists. It's odd to note his stoic silence over this terrible situation, while supporters have continued to criticize Amaechi, the Transportation Minister, who foresaw tomorrow and appealed with the Vice President and others to avoid it.
Osinbajo's odd justifications for rejecting such a significant proposal only serve to highlight that he is badly unsuitable to lead this country.
Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo and those promoting him are fully aware that President Muhammadu Buhari told the nation in January 2022 while chatting with Channels TV that he has a candidate for the office of President, and for him to now offer himself for the office of President without consulting Mr. President indicates that he is battle-ready to work against the President's and his candidate's interests while claiming that he is working to impeach the President.
Even if the APC decides to zone the presidential slot to the South West, which is highly unlikely, and with Prof. Osinbanjo ceasing to be a member of the Lagos Chapter of the party after the revalidation of his membership of the party in Ogun State, it is still immoral for him to run for president in 2023, according to the party chief, because all past Presidents of South West extraction are from Ogun State - General Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Ernest
Such reality will fuel ethnic bigotry, hate and animosity amongst Nigerians of various tribes.
Eze questioned Vice President Osinbanjo's administrative competency and sought his assistance on how to ensure that this administration fulfills its key pledges to the country. "Comparing him to prior Vice Presidents of this country like Atiku Abubakar, Dr. Jonathan Goodluck, and Namadi Sambo, whose economic teams were perceived to be far better, and picking the majority of his core economic team from one region of the country."
Eze emphasized that, for the reasons given and many others, the Vice President should withdraw his interest as soon as possible, saving the country the embarrassment that his unlikely emergence would cause.©Standard Gazette, 2021.
