Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup went into tatters Tuesday evening as they played out a 1-1 draw against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, reports The Standard Gazette.
The Eagles were without Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, who pulled up with an injury in the 1-0 win over Rwanda on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio stadium, Uyo.
Right back Ola Aina had to be replaced in the 10th minute through injury.
The Eagles were behind 25 minutes into the game as William Troost-Ekong conceded an own goal as he aimed to clear the ball from a dangerous cross.
Calvin Bassey equalised for the three-time African champions in the 44th minute with a textbook header.
Borg sides were tepid in a physical game in the second half, and Nigeria would need the second-placed teams in other groups to have bad games to have any chances of qualification to the World Cup.
