Argentina progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 3-2 win over seven-time African champions Egypt.
Egypt were 2-0 ahead and even had a goal disallowed for a foul in the buildup to the ‘goal’ in the second half.
However, goals from Cristiano Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez dealt a cruel blow to the Pharaohs, who will head back to Cairo.
Messi had a penalty saved in the first half by the impressive Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.
The miss was Messi’s second in the tournament and fourth in eight FIFA World Cup matches.
Shobeir made other fantastic saves in the game and is already in contention for being awarded the save of the World Cup.
The current world champions will face Switzerland or Colombia in the quarter-final stage.
