Super Eagles head coach Éric Sékou Chelle on Tuesday named a 39-man provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe later this month.
The three-time African champions are fifth on the Group C log after two defeats and two draws and are in dire need of positive results to restore hopes of making a seventh appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals.
There are new invites for the likes of Chrisantus Uche who has been impressive at Spanish side Getafe as well as Tolu Arokodare who is the leading goal scorer in the Belgian Jupiler League with 16 goals.
Glasgow Rangers defender Leon Balogun and Ahmed Musa who is currently starring for Kano Pillars make their returns to the national team.
Goalkeepers Stanley Nwabali and Adeleye Adebayo, defenders William Ekong, Calvin Bassey and Olaoluwa Aina, midfielders Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi, and forwards Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen and Simon Moses all cut this month’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
There are also goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, defenders Bruno Onyemaechi and Zaidu Sanusi, midfielders Frank Onyeka and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and forwards Samuel Chukwueze and Sadiq Umar.
Defenders Igoh Ogbu and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, midfielders Anthony Dennis and Papa Daniel Mustapha, and forward Jerome Akor Adams are the other new players invited for the first time.
There could be returns for home-based goalkeeper Kayode Bankole, defender Jordan Torunarigha, midfielder Joseph Ayodele-Aribo and forwards Cyriel Dessers and Nathan Tella if they eventually make the final list of 23.
Rwanda, South Africa, Benin Republic and Lesotho are the teams above Nigeria on the World Cup qualifying table.
Chelles’ team will travel to Rwanda before taking on Zimbabwe’s Warriors at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo four days later.
