Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has highlighted the club’s need to get back to winning ways after the team’s 2-1 home victory over Rangers late Thursday night at Old Trafford in the Europa League.
An own goal by England goalkeeper Jack Butland had given United the lead when he attempted to punch the ball away but inadvertently diverted it into his net.
Nigeria international Cgreil Dessers came off the substitute bench to restore parity for Rangers in the 88th minute. Still, just when the Gers, who also featured out-of-favour Super Eagles defender, Leon Balogun, had hoped that a draw was in the kitty, the United captain came up with a 90th-minute half volley to put a knife into the hearts of Rangers supporters.
Fernandes spoke to TNT Sports in the post-match interview.
“I know how much it means for the fans to win games.
You really want to win games,” the Portuguese enthused.
“We are a little bit frustrated because we started the year well here with two great games against Liverpool and Arsenal then Southampton we had good resilience but didn’t play good football. We had the game with Brighton which didn’t go for us.
Fernandes, who was making his 50th Europa League appearance in front of his supporters, stated that the objective is to avoid adding more games to the team’s schedules in an already congested season.
“We want to get through the Europa League and get to the final in Bilbao. We want to get top eight so we don’t have to play two more games.
“It’s not about the character. We have to prove that in the 90 minutes, we can’t bring that out when we concede a goal. We concede a late goal and we have to score a late goal.
“At this club, you need to win every game.
You know that if you don’t win games here, it will be difficult. I hope our fans never get used to losing games. I hope they believe in this team to win games.”
The Red Devils will be guests to Romanian side FCSB next Thursday night in their last game of the league format before the round of 16 stage.
