Nigeria’s U-20 men’s national team head coach Aliyu Zubairu on Tuesday called up 30 players in preparation for a two-match tour of Egypt, The Standard Gazette reports.
The friendlies in the North African country are geared towards building the team for the 2025 CAF U-20 men’s Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Cote d’Ivoire from 26 April to -18 May 2025.
The team’s Administrator, Aliyu Lawal disclosed to the official website of the Nigeria Football Federation that the games have been scheduled to be held on February 25 and 27.
The four semifinalists at the tournament in the Ivory Coast will represent Africa at the FIFA U-20 men’s World Cup in Child to be held between 27 September and 19 October 2025.
The Flying Eagles were Africa U-20 champions in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2005, 2011 and 2015.
They won the WAFU-B U-20 Championship held in Lome, Togo in October last year to be eligible for the finals in Cote d’Ivoire. They defeated Ghana’s Black Satellites 3-1 in the final match.
The two-time FIFA World Cup runners-up, in 1989 and 2005, came within breathing distance of the semi-finals at the FIFA U-20 World Cup finals in Argentina, before losing narrowly to the Korean Republic after extra time.
