Kenya Bans Fans At World Under-20 Championship

Fans will be barred from watching the World Under-20 Champions at Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani, in the outskirts of Nairobi, announced Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.

The CS said the move is set to avert the spread of the coronavirus amid the looming wave four of the deadly pandemic.

Amina noted big screens would be mounted in various parts of the country so that fans can follow the proceedings from whatever location.

“It is regrettable that we are delivering the Championships in a very limited format. We have to factor in the fact that we are facing another possible wave of coronavirus infections and so such decisions must be made. There will be no spectators unless the situation changes dramatically for the better,” stated Amina.

The global event has attracted participants from 128 countries.

“We are more than ready. This event will give us an advantage because it has opened more opportunities for us to host major events in the future,” she added.

However, the decision can be reversed should the infection rate reduce between now and August 17, when the six-day event kicks off.
