The Premier League on Sunday evening explained the reason why Joao Pedro’s goal for Brighton against Manchester United was disallowed in their 3-1 win over the Red Devils.
The Brazilian peeled away in celebration with scores delicately poised at 1-1 but his joy was caught short after the VAR check ruled out the strike.
Brighton defender defender Jan Paul van Hecke was deemed to have fouled Diogo Dalot in the buildup before the goal.
To the dismay of the Brighton team and their fans, referee Peter Bankes indicated that the goal had been disallowed.
Craig Pawson was in charge of the VAR operations, with Steve Meredith as his assistant.
A statement from the Premier League Match Centre X account read:
“The referee’s call of goal was checked by VAR, who deemed there was a foul by van Hecke on Dalot in the build-up and recommended an on-field review.
“The referee overturned the original decision and the goal was disallowed.”
Brighton still managed to prevail with a 3-1 victory despite the controversial decision.
Ganbisn forward Yankuba Minteh gave the visitors an early advantage but Bruno Fernandes equalised for United from the penalty spot.
Brighton restored their advantage on the hour mark, with Kaoru Mitoma’s second goal in less than seven days.
Georginio Rutter profited from an Andre Onana howler in the 76th minute as he put a gloss on the scoreline.
The win sees Brighton move up to ninth place in the Premier League following the victory, while United are in 13th.
