The World Athletics has halted – at least for now – the plans of Nigeria’s sprint sensation Favour Ofili to change allegiance to Turkey.
The 100 m and 200m sprinter has had running battles with the leadership of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) over her lack of registration for the 100m race at the 2024 Olympics, despite her preparation and qualification for the quadrennial event.
Ofili eventually competed in the 200m event, but the Delta-born athlete did not make it to the podium.
An independent committee headed by ace sports journalist Mumini was also set up to investigate the matter, with fines paid by some members of the AFN found culpable.
Ofili was expected to remain a Nigerian sprinter for a period of three calendar years.
“The application to change national allegiance has not been approved by World Athletics,” a federation official said.
“As it stands, the athlete remains under Nigeria’s sporting jurisdiction according to existing regulations.”
The verdict by World Athletics remains unclear, as it is uncertain whether she can represent Nigeria at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon next month.
