Edo CP launch an investigation An irate mob, backed by local vigilantes, have set a robbery suspect on fire in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State. The Police, in a statement on Saturday, 13 May 2022 by the PPRO Bello Kontong, confirmed the incident in Benin City. The Police did not mention the suspect's name; however, Standard Gazette learned that the alleged suspect was a 15-year-old boy. Murder Investigation The Commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, has ordered a thorough investigation into "the barbaric" and "dehumanizing" acts of jungle justice. "The Commissioner of Police, while reacting to the ugly incident, frowned at the action of the vigilantes, who, instead of taking the suspect to the Police for proper investigation and prosecution, aided the irate mob in burning a suspect alive," the statement reads. The 15-year-old teenager was arrested on Saturday 13 May 2022 by the vigilante for stealing a motorbike. The report also claimed a locally-made gun was found in his possession. The suspect was allegedly arrested for stealing. He was stoned before being set ablaze without any recourse to the law. CP Abutu Yaro described the act as "barbaric and inimical" to the law governing Nigeria and "advised the indigenes not to allow disgruntled elements in the society to take laws into their hands by killing suspects arrested for an alleged crime in such a dehumanizing and unlawful manner." He further cautioned that nobody has the right to treat suspects in such a barbaric manner, and it is wrong for anyone to assume the position of a law enforcement agency. CP Yaro said suspects must be immediately handed over to the Police or any law enforcement agency constitutionally saddled to investigate and prosecute such suspects. He appealed to the general public to be calm as the Police go after those responsible for the gruesome act.
