There are no plans to delay the reopening of schools in Kenya, announced the Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha.
Prof. Magoha said third term studies would be resumed on May 10 as earlier scheduled despite the country’s rising cases of coronavirus.
The Cabinet Secretary spoke on Monday while supervising Kenya’s Certificate of Secondary Education examinations container in Kiambu town, Kenya’s central.
He allayed fears that the current high covid-19 infection in the East African nation could prolong schools’ reopening, saying the government has no intention to further interfere with the school calendar.
Education is one of the country’s sectors that have borne the brunt of the pandemic after all learning institutions were temporarily closed for almost a year in 2020 to tame the spread of the virus.
Class eight and form four students suffered massively after the Ministry of Education pushed forward the national exams to March 2021.
Learners always sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) between October and November annually.
The 2021 KCPE kicked off on March 22 and ran to March 24. The Ministry reported more than 1 million students to have sat for the exams, and the result will be out in less than two weeks, announced Prof. Magoha.
“As far as KCPE is concerned, the results will be out within two weeks. Should there be any change for any reason, we will let you know,” he reiterated.
On the other hand, the KCSE began on March 26 and is expected to end next week.
Over 750,000 students are still for the exams.
The term three studies will end on July 16, preceded by a half-term break between June 3 and June 7.
