Fifty-nine students have been hospitalized after a fire broke out at Buru Buru Girls’ dormitory in Nairobi on Sunday.
Thirty others have been treated and discharged, according to the police report.
The school’s authority reported that the students had inhaled smoke fumes during the Sunday evening incident.
None of the students was reported to have sustained burns.
A video footage that went viral on social media showed some of the pupils plunging from upper levels. At the same time, observers stood helplessly by after they were denied admission to the school to help with the rescue efforts.
Following the incidents, a section of parents flooded the institution demanding to take their children home with them, but they were denied the opportunity.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established, and an investigation has been launched.
