Residents of Kabuchai in Bungoma, Western Kenya, were left reeling in shock after a middle-aged man dug his own grave to avoid paying $150 debt he owes to people.

Martin Juma, 46, told the huge crowd that gathered to witness the peculiar incident that like has become extremely difficult hence no need to continue living.

Many Kenyans are going through hard economic times occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic. Scores were left jobless since the virus hit the East African nation last year following massive retrenchment.

The bizarre incident shocked the local authorities.

“This incident has really astonished me. It’s rare to find someone digging his own grave, the man who did this will be arrested so that he can explain more why he decided to dig his own grave,” said the area Chief Bonface Ndiera who arrived at the scene to witness the incident. He had received a tip-off from the locals.
