A Man To Spend 2 Years In Jail For Stealing SGR Metal Poles

A Mombasa court has sentenced a man to two years in prison for destroying and stealing Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) metallic poles.

Appearing before Justice Martha Mutuku Ali Badi Chumvi alias Swaleh Hussein pleaded guilty of stealing a metal worth Ksh30000 ($300). He also confessed to having been imprisoned for vandalizing SGR in the past.

In her ruling, Justice Mutuku said the man's action was a threat to the safety of SGR and that the man was not sorry for his action.

His co-accused Boniface Ngonda pleaded not guilty and was released on a Ksh.200,000 ($2000) bond with one surety, with an alternative Ksh.100,000 ($1000) cash bail.

The case will be mentioned on November 29 for pre-trial.
