On Friday, a Kenyan woman was arraigned in court and charged with assaulting her husband by burning his face and chest with hot water.

Esther Wanjiku was charged before senior principal magistrate Monica Maroro in Kibera, Kenya’s largest slum.

According to the charge sheet seen by the Standard Gazette, the suspect committed the act on July 5 in Nairobi’s Dagoreti estate.

On a fateful day, Peter Kariuki, her husband, knocked on the door at around 9 pm local time, and his wife immediately splashed hot water on his face and chest upon opening the door.

The complainant was forced to move to his neighbour’s house, where he spent the night.  The following day he reported the matter to a local police station and then proceeded to the hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

Esther was arrested after public members gave the police a tip-off on suspicion that he could flee the area.

She denied the charges and was released on a $100 cash bail.

The case will be mentioned on July 17.
