A postmortem on the deceased Form One student at Mukumu Girls’ High School in Western Kenya showed that she died of stomach inflammation.
According to the autopsy conducted by government pathologist Dr Titus Ngulungu, Wendy Abetty Oyugi, 14, was highly hydrated at the time of her demise.
Abetty is one of two students who died last week after consuming reportedly contaminated food and water at the school, with over 500 other students reporting health complications.
“The dehydration was prominent on her body. The stomach contained blood due to something very unpleasant which caused a lot of havoc leading to shock on other vital organs,” said Dr. Ngulungu.
The pathologist observed that they had taken tissues and samples from the stomach to determine what was causing the severe bleeding.
The deceased’s mother, Joyce Oyugi, said she was called by the school’s deputy principal on Tuesday, who requested her to pick up her daughter.
The student was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for an alleged bacterial infection and discharged.
On March 31, Abetty’s condition worsened, and she was rushed to a nearby health facility, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The school was indefinitely closed on Monday to pave the way for investigations.
