After the missing victims were found, a recovery attempt initiated after a boat wrecked off the pier beach of Lake Victoria in Homa Bay, western Kenya, was called off.

The death toll has now hit ten after one more body was discovered on Thursday evening.

The boat, which carried 19 people, capsized around 500 meters off Homa Bay's pier beach.

The boat was sailing from Homa Bay to Ndhuru Beach, which is roughly 12 kilometers away in Suba South constituency in the region.

Immediately after the incident, Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Maritime Authority, and the Beach Management Unit joined hands to search for the missing people.

Eight people were injured during the incident, two were given first aid and later discharged, and others were still hospitalized.

Bad weather is believed to have caused the accident.

“The boat was split in half, and I clung to a drum for a while before the rescue team found me,” said coxswain Felix Ouma.
