Brave for another strike, Mombasa health workers tell the public
By Samuel Ouma
Mombasa health care workers have threatened to down their tools after the Mombasa county government failed to address their grievances.
Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) Mombasa branch Secretary Peter Maroko has noted that Governor Hassan Joho’s administration has failed to implement 80 percent of the issues they agreed to in return to work formula in February this year.
In November, more than 1,000 members of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun), Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (Kuco), Kenya National Union of Medical Laboratories Officers (KNUMLO), and Kenya Health Professional Society went on a strike, paralyzing services in public health facilities.
The workers were protesting lack of promotions, delayed salaries, and failure to remit their statutory deductions.
“In the agreement we signed, most of the issues have never been implemented.
From delayed salaries, promotions and delayed remittance of statutory deductions.
Every time we look for the finance department officials so that we can have a conversation about these issues, they are never available,” the People Daily quoted Maroko.
Maroko said they would bring the county’s operations to a standstill by locking offices to key departments until their plights are addressed.
