The CAF Executive Committee, chaired by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, successfully concluded its visit to Nairobi on Monday, September 16, 2024.
The committee held its meeting in a Nairobi hotel; the gathering brought together key figures in African football to discuss significant developments, with a particular focus on preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
An in-depth review of Kenya’s infrastructure and logistical progress was at the heart of the agenda following Dr. Motsepe’s detailed inspections of key stadiums.
On Sunday, September 15, he toured three significant venues—Kasarani, Nyayo, and Talanta—alongside Football Kenya Federation (FKF) officials to assess their readiness for the prestigious tournament.
These stadiums are expected to host matches during the historic AFCON 2027 event.
Dr. Motsepe expressed satisfaction with the strides Kenya has made so far in preparing its facilities but emphasized the importance of meeting the standards required by CAF and FIFA.
“I commend the advancements made, but we must continue to monitor future progress closely. The AFCON is a marquee event, and we are determined to ensure the host nations meet the world-class standards expected,” he said.
The CAF President lauded the strong collaboration between FKF and the Government of Kenya, led by FKF President Nick Mwendwa, as crucial to the successful preparation for the tournament.
“The relationship between Nick and the government is something I’m very happy about. The emphasis in every country is to work together to ensure that there is at least one stadium that is FIFA and CAF approved,” Dr. Motsepe said.
Kenya’s President, William Ruto, also addressed the Executive Committee, reaffirming the country’s dedication to hosting the AFCON in 2027 and the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2025, which Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host.
“Hosting both CHAN and AFCON are major milestones for us,” President Ruto remarked.
“I speak frequently with President Patrice Motsepe, and we discuss progress and much more. I also have conversations with President Samia [of Tanzania] and President Museveni [of Uganda], and we are all aligned to making sure both events are successful.”
The upcoming AFCON 2027, alongside the CHAN tournament in 2025, is a historic moment for East African football. Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are working closely to create a memorable event for the continent and the global football community.
