One person has been confirmed dead and nine others injured after consuming illicit brew in Nyahururu town, central Kenya.
The patients were admitted to Nyahururu County Referral on Sunday morning after experiencing vomiting and stomach aches.
They were picked from various locations within the town, but most were found from a single point in an unconscious state.
Dr Felix Masongo, one of the doctors attending the patients, noted that the liquor was laced with a poisonous chemical.
Three were treated and discharged out of the nine patients, whereas six others are still being monitored.
Investigations to determine the liquor’s composition have been launched said the Laikipia County Chief Officer for Health and Medical Services, Dr Donald Mugoi.
The victims are reported to have been invited to a party by a local bar owner whose wife had given birth.
Dr Mugoi has cautioned revellers against consuming illegal brews and liquor from unlicensed establishments.
“We appeal to anybody who drank alcohol from any joint near the market to come to the hospital for a check-up. I assure them that does not mean they will be arrested if they come to the hospital, it is for their safety,” said Mr Mugoi.©Standard Gazette, 2021.
