A couple has been confirmed dead after a building under construction collapsed in Ruaka, central Kenya.

The incident took place on Thursday morning at around 3:30 am when the man and woman were sleeping in their house adjacent to the construction site.

Rescue operations headed by the Kenya Defence Force have been called off after another person trapped in the rubble was saved.

The tragedy occurred just two months after a seven-story building under construction fell in Kirigiti, close to Kiambu town, killing five people. Six more people were injured during the incident.

Kenya's National Construction Authority (NCA) blamed poor workmanship for more than 80 per cent of all building collapses in the country.
