The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) lawmakers have arrived in Nairobi ahead of the sittings that will take place between March 5 and 20.

President William Ruto is expected to officially open the second sitting of EALA on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

“A highlight of the session will be the official address by H.E. Dr William Ruto on Tuesday,” said the Parliament of Kenya in a statement.

This session marks the regional body’s return, as its previous rotational plenary in Kenya was held in 2018.

The Assembly’s rotational sessions, as outlined in the EAC Treaty, are critical to increasing visibility, encouraging public engagement, and enhancing collaboration with the Parliaments of the Partner States.

During the session, legislators will debate five major bills, aligning with EALA’s responsibility to pass legislation that promotes regional cooperation.

They will also discuss seven oversight reports, emphasizing the Assembly’s responsibility to ensure that EAC institutions operate effectively and by the Treaty.

In addition, six Motions for Resolutions will be addressed, demonstrating the EALA’s commitment to representing East African voices.

The session will also welcome members of Kenya’s Parliament, along with High Commissioners and Ambassadors from other EAC Partner States, fostering collaboration.
