Four suspects in the Embakasi gas explosion case, which left 300 people critically injured and six dead, were brought before the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi for pre-trial.
They include Derrick Kimathi (the gas plant owner), Joseph Makau, David Walunya Ong’are and Marrian Mutete Kioko, all officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has filed an application seeking to detain them for 21 days pending investigations.
“Police are seeking more time to investigate murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, negligence acts, causing harm and abuse of office charges against the suspects,” said the DCI.
The DCI argued that several victims are still too traumatized to make statements because of the incident’s aftermath.
Furthermore, some of the victims were severely burned, making it difficult to identify the deceased without using DNA samples. Not only that but there are still unidentified suspects in the case.
The ruling on the application will be delivered on February 7.
