Kenya’s St. Theresa’s Eregi Girls High School was temporarily closed on Tuesday following an outbreak of strange disease in the institution.
The move to suspend learning in the institution was arrived at during a meeting between the county and the administration’s officials.
Form one, two, and three students will break for one week following the meeting to pave the way for investigations and avert the crisis.
On the other hand, form four students will remain in school as they continue to prepare for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School (KCSE).
“The BOM, Ministry of Education officials, TSC representatives and the school’s sponsor agreed to allow Form 1, 2, and 3 students to break temporarily and are expected to report back next week once the situation has been carefully assessed and necessary measures put in place to prevent any recurrence of a similar situation,” said the County Government of Kakamega.
The institution hit the headlines in the Media on Monday after more than 95 learners had difficulty walking.
They were booked for treatment in various hospitals in Kakamega County, Western part of the Country.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Bonface Okoth, said blood samples from the affected students were sent to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) in Nairobi and Kisumu Counties for further analysis.
Dr. Okoth emphasized the government’s steadfast commitment to the safety and well-being of all students at educational institutions.
He promised that efforts would be made to establish a suitable learning atmosphere devoid of disturbances and injury, where pupils may develop academically.
