Five suspects have been charged with the murder of lawmaker Charles Ong’ondo Were following a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to consolidate two separate criminal cases that had previously been filed at Kibera and Milimani law courts.
Lady Justice Diana Kavedza, sitting at the High Court in Nairobi, approved the prosecution’s request to merge the cases, allowing the five accused to face a joint trial for the murder of the former legislator.
The suspects—William Imoli Shigali alias Imo, Edwin Odour Odhiambo alias Machuani, Ebel Ochieng alias Dave Calo, Isaac Kuria Chege alias Kush, and Allan Omondi Ogola—are alleged to have murdered the late Were on the evening of April 30, 2025, near the City Mortuary Roundabout along Ngong Road, in the Kilimani area of Nairobi County.
According to the charge sheet, the five are accused of jointly and unlawfully causing the death of MP Were at approximately 7:40 p.m. on the said evening.
The suspects had previously pleaded not guilty to the murder charges when arraigned separately—Shigali, Odour, and Ochieng at the Kibera High Court, and Kuria and Omondi at the Milimani Law Courts.
With the cases now consolidated, the prosecution is expected to present a unified line of evidence in the trial, streamlining the judicial process and avoiding duplication.
Justice Kavedza set August 14, 2025, as the date for the bond ruling for the first three suspects—Shigali, Odour, and Ochieng. A separate bond hearing for Kuria and Omondi has been scheduled for September 22, 2025.
