Former Murang’a County Governor Mwangi Wa Iria, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, was brought before the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, to face serious corruption charges.
Wa Iria, along with his alleged accomplices, David Maina Njeri, a former county finance officer, and Solomon Mutura Kimani, a local businessman, stand accused of embezzling a staggering Ksh351 million ($2.6 million) from Murang’a County funds.
Following his arraignment, the former governor was granted release on a cash bail of Ksh10 million ($74000), with the option of a Ksh20 million bond ($148000) and a surety of a similar amount, under the condition that he does not leave the country without prior court approval and refrains from tampering with prosecution witnesses.

Meanwhile, David Maina Njeri secured release on a cash bail of Ksh1 million ($7400) or a Ksh5 million bond ($37000) with a similar surety.
Solomon Mutura Kimani, on the other hand, obtained release on a cash bail of Ksh4 million ($30000) or a Ksh7 million ($52000) bond, with a surety matching the amount.
Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzyoki prohibited the suspects from leaving the country without prior court approval.
They were further ordered not to tamper with prosecution witnesses.
Additionally, Mwangi wa Iria and Solomon Mutura Kimani were instructed to surrender their travel documents to the court.
Jane Waigwe Kimani and David Maina Kiama, who were absent, were directed to appear in court on May 7, 2024, to take plea.
