Gedion Munyao Mutiso, the first elected MP for Machakos County’s Yatta seat in southeast Kenya, has passed away.
Mutiso, 91, breathed his last in a hospital in Nairobi while receiving treatment on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, the family announced.
The current Yatta MP, Robert Basil, eulogized the deceased as a visionary leader who impacted many lives.
“It is sad to learn the sudden demise of the first and longest serving Member of Parliament – Yatta Constituency, Hon. Gedion Munyao Mutiso majorly known as Mutiso wa Yatta,” said MP Basil.
“Mutiso was a true visioned leader, who set pace for others like me to run Yatta Constituency on a goal, A goal to transform Yatta Sub-county.
“
“The First Yatta Constituency MP Gedion Mutiso served Yatta Constituency after the colonial period. He truly served Yatta Constituency rightfully and fruitfully. May his family and Yatta people be condoled. May the Almighty God give you strength and comfort you during this hard time,” he added.
Mutiso, born on March 31, 1932, had been involved in politics since 1955. In the 1960s, he was a labour organizer who fought for equal employment rights for Africans. He also deputized the late Tom Mboya as Secretary General of the Kenya Federation of Laborers.
He also served in the military as a Corporal but quit unceremoniously due to abuse by the colonial authorities.
He worked as an Assistant Minister in the ministries of Home Affairs, Education, Health, Agriculture, Lands, and Housing while an MP.
