Lamu Governor Issa Timamy has been named as the new Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader in an acting capacity.

Governor will replace Musalia Mudavadi who was appointed as Prime Cabinet Secretary by President William Ruto.

In a communique, ANC secretary general Simon Gikuru said Timamy had been nominated to take leadership of the party by its Council Bureau.

"Musalia Mudavadi relinquished his ANC Party Leader following his nomination for appointment as Prime Cabinet Secretary of the Republic of Kenya. This is in accordance with Article 77 (2) of the Constitution of Kenya.

"The ANC Council has since nominated Governor Issa Timamy as the Acting Party Leader in accordance with the ANC Party Constitution," reads part of the notice.

Mudavadi's resignation is in line with Article 77 (2) of the constitution, which prohibits any appointed State officer from becoming a political party member. The constitution also forbids a state officer from working in any other capacity.
