Kenyan Governor Wavinya Ndeti has dismissed claims circulating online that she was detained in the United Kingdom while attempting to smuggle hundreds of millions of shillings.

In a statement issued on September 9, 2024, Governor Ndeti condemned the allegations as part of a politically motivated smear campaign to undermine her administration’s progress.

“This campaign is aimed at dampening the impact of the transformative work we are doing in Machakos,” the statement read.

The Machakos Governor Ndeti denounced the rumours, calling them “demeaning” and “insulting to the intelligence of the people of Machakos and Kenya.”

The governor also highlighted the inaccuracy of the allegations, stressing that those spreading false information are ignorant of the robust regulatory systems in place.

She reassured the public that both she and her family are safe and in good standing domestically and internationally.

“I can confirm that my family and I are safe and sound and remain in good standing both home and abroad,” she affirmed.

Governor Ndeti emphasized her administration’s achievements, stating that nearly 1,000 projects have been completed since August 2022.

She also noted that the county had collected Ksh1.78 billion ($13.8 million) in source revenue for the 2023/2024 fiscal year — the highest ever recorded in the county since devolution.

In the strongly worded statement, Ndeti vowed to take legal action against those responsible for spreading what she described as “baseless rumors and fake news.”

She warned that such defamatory misinformation tarnishes her reputation and endangers her family’s safety.

The governor also clarified that she would hold those responsible personally accountable should anything happen to her or her family.

She encouraged those who spread the allegations to back their claims with solid evidence, signalling her readiness to face the accusations head-on.
