Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has unveiled major reforms in Kenya’s health sector, focusing on enhancing critical care services and cancer management support for patients across the country.

In a statement, Duale highlighted the government’s commitment to improving access to essential healthcare services, particularly for patients requiring intensive care and those battling cancer.

“We are thrilled to announce that additional funding has been allocated to enhance the benefits available for patients in need of cancer diagnosis and treatment services,” he said.

Under the new reforms, the Social Health Authority (SHA) has significantly increased the annual allocation for cancer patients to Ksh550,000 per year.

Of this amount, Ksh400,000 will be provided through the SHIF program, while an additional Ksh150,000 will be accessible via ECCIF.

These funds aim to ease the financial burden on patients undergoing diagnosis and treatment.

Similarly, the reimbursement for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU) services has been raised from KES 4,480 per day to KES 28,000 per day.

This move is expected to improve service delivery in hospitals and ensure that critically ill patients receive the necessary medical support.

“This change underscores our commitment to ensuring that essential healthcare services are accessible and adequately supported,” Duale stated.
