Higher Education Loan Board Denies Hacking Claims

Kenya’s Higher Education Loan Board (HELB) has rubbished online reports stating that its system has been hacked.

A viral post claimed that the hackers had taken control of over 5,000 student accounts.

Students were instructed to go to Huduma Centers with their national ID cards if they received a text from HELB regarding payment in the mail that has now been marked as suspicious.

The post stated that although the hackers had entered the accounts, they faced difficulties taking out the funds.

However, the board has assured Kenyans that the funds recently released by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to cover scholarships and loans for first-year students in public universities are safe.

“Disregard this false HELB message claiming a hack on batch numbers! Your funds are safe,” stated the board.

It also advised students not to rush to Huduma Centers to ensure their accounts were secure.

“No need to rush to Huduma Centres. Let’s verify any information before sharing,” it added.
