Kenya recorded 128 extrajudicial killings between October 2022 and August 2023.
The Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) indicated in a report that incidents of torture and assault had also grown to 482 cases, a doubling in numbers compared to the same time in 2021 and 2022.
The incidents have increased since President William Ruto assumed office.
According to IMLU, 351 out of 482 incidents involved torture, cruel or humiliating treatment or punishment.
Based on age, most victims/survivors were young male adults aged 18-35 years, accounting for 314.
121 people were between the ages of 36 and 65, 44 were between the ages of 0 and 17, and three were beyond the age of 65.
Out of 482, 415 were men and 67 women.
The report further noted that the country has seen a wave of punitive policing during protests, extrajudicial executions, deaths in custody, deliberate torture of children, interference with investigative authorities, unconditional interference by the National Police Service, and other human rights violations.
