Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops continue to assist locals in Garissa County by distributing water in various locations to alleviate the effects of the region's ongoing drought.
On Monday, September 12, 2022, the troops drawn from the 5 Kenya Rifles Battalion (5KR) distributed over 20,000 litres of water to Wayamajibriil and Timass villages, in which more than 800 locals benefited.
On September 10, 2022, the troops supplied 18,000 litres of water to the residents of Maalamin and Bulla hajir villages in the same county.
The Humanitarian Civic Assistance forms part of KDF's secondary mission of assisting and cooperating with other authorities in emergency or disaster situations.
The drought results from the poor performance of the short 2021 rainy season combined with the previous two failed consecutive seasons and the early termination of the long 2022 rainy season©Standard Gazette, 2021.
