Kenya and Italy on Wednesday signed six Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote universal health coverage.
The signing of the MoUs was witnessed by Mary Muthoni Muriuki, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards and Italy’s Deputy Ambassador Lorenza Gambacorta.
The agreement calls on the two countries to boost international development cooperation by exchanging knowledge and experiences to improve healthcare systems.
It also aims to boost local pharmaceutical and medical supply manufacturing, increasing healthcare self-sufficiency.
Through training programs, collaboration will include knowledge sharing in specialist healthcare fields.
The two countries will further work together to improve global health security and disease control, with assistance from the Kenya Centre for Disease Control (CDC).
There are also plans to construct a regional healthcare centre to provide specialist mental healthcare services and support programs for reproductive and maternal health.
Furthermore, both nations’ specialized healthcare and research institutes will collaborate on research, training, and healthcare services, with possible initiatives in health tourism being investigated.
