Kenya, in partnership with Development Gateway: an IREX Venture (DG) and the Division of Tobacco Control in the Ministry of Health, has launched the Tobacco Control Data Initiative (TCDI) Kenya dashboard.
The dashboard, launched in Nairobi by Dr. Patrick Amoth, the acting Director General of Health, is a one-stop-shop for policymakers to access relevant data needed to advance tobacco control implementation in Kenya.
Tobacco use is a leading preventable cause of death and disability from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Kenya. NCDs such as cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive airway diseases, diabetes, cancers, and renal diseases account for more than 50% of hospital admissions and 39% of all deaths annually in Kenya.
The TCDI Kenya dashboard is one of several country-specific platforms designed by Development Gateway in collaboration with the University of Cape Town’s Research Unit on the Economics of Excisable Products (REEP).
TCDI country dashboards also exist for South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, and one will soon be launched for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The TCDI Kenya dashboard is crucial in Kenya’s tobacco control efforts. It provides policymakers with the necessary data to make informed decisions and reduce the impact of tobacco on NCDs in Kenya.
This initiative is a significant step towards improving public health outcomes and reducing tobacco-related deaths and disabilities in the country.
