The Kenya women’s national 15s rugby side, Kenya Lionesses, hopes of qualifying for the 2022 Rugby World Cup qualifiers ended on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, after falling 16-15 to Colombia repechage qualifier.
The match was played at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi.
Colombia’s spectacular performance in the first half paid off as they took an 11-0 lead in the first 30 minutes. However, Kenya put more effort, which saw the first half ending 11-7.
A beautiful try in the 52nd minute by Janet Otieno put the rejuvenated Lionesses in a 15-11 lead, but it was short-lived following two costly sin-bins. The visitor made use of their number to score the winning try.
Following the win, the visitors now proceed to the four-nation repechage slated for January 2022 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, where they will face Samoa, Europe, and Asia representatives.
The winner at the final qualification will then advance to the World Cup to be held in New Zealand.
