Kenya Morans return to Fiba Afrobasket Championship starts with a defeat

Kenya Morans suffered a 88-70 loss in the hands of Ivory Coast in their Group C opener at Fiba Afrobasket Championship at the Kigali Arena, Rwanda.

In the first quarter, the West Africans edged out Morans 26-24, but the latter bagged the second quarter with a 21-15 win. The two teams went to break with a 39-39 tie.

However, the Morans were not strong enough to handle the marauding Ivorians after the break. The five-time champions beat Kenya 21-15 and 28-16 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Kenya’s Tylor Ongwae emerged as the match’s top scorer with 25 points, two above Matt Costello of Ivory Coast.

Morans will meet Nigeria in their second match today at 2 pm (Kenyan time).

Nigeria began the tournament with an 87-71 win over Mali.

Kenya is making a return to the top African men’s basketball competition after 28 years of absence.
