Kenya’s Senate Standing Committee on Information, Communication, and Technology has resolved to work closely with the Technology Service Providers of Kenya (TESPOK) to ensure that Kenya becomes the leading ICT hub in Africa.
In a meeting with the TESPOK leadership led by the Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Fiona Asonga, in Nairobi, the Members of the Committee underscored the need for internet connectivity all over the country if Kenya is to realize the gains of the digital economy.
“The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) collects revenue from the technology service providers which is supposed to ensure that we have internet connectivity all over the country. We will work with TESPOK, CA, and the Universal Service Fund to see how that money can be utilized, “said Senator Osotsi, the committee member.
On their part, TESPOK urged Parliament to pass the Critical ICT Infrastructure Bill to ensure there is the right legislative framework for the technology service providers to operate in.
“We appeal to you, as our Legislature, to come up with legislation on protection of critical ICT infrastructure. The industry is willing to support and make a difference to the communities that we’re engaged in provided that we have the right legislative framework,” said Ms. Asonga.
The Committee also considered the Information Communication and Technology Infrastructure Bill and a legislative proposal on the Konza Technopolis Bill, 2022.
