Kenya’s National Police Service (NPS) has launched a training program investigating human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) developed the curriculum following several training sessions for Kenya’s security forces.

The curriculum is intended to improve the skills of police officers at all levels in detecting, preventing, investigating, and prosecuting human trafficking cases.

In 2018, UNODC launched a training initiative in Kenya with support from the European Union and German Cooperation GIZ as part of the Better Migration Management Programme.

This program has provided extensive courses to hundreds of officers, with the most proficient individuals leading in curriculum development.

James Kamau, Commandant of Embakasi, representing Police Chief Japhet Koome, the Chief Guest at the launch, highlighted Kenya’s vulnerability to such crimes. He emphasized the importance of promptly integrating the curriculum into police training colleges.

On his part, UNODC’s Pieter Cronje, who spoke on behalf of other partners, acknowledged the teams’ commitment to drafting and validating the curriculum, terming it a masterpiece.

“Several fully sponsored trainings have been lined up for NPS members, with the launch depicting a significant step forward in the fight against human trafficking in the country and across the region,” said the National Police Service (NPS).
