The women’s 1500m world record holder Faith Kipyegon has been awarded the status of the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya.

The award was issued by President William Ruto on Tuesday during the 60th Jamhuri Day Celebrations in Nairobi.

The award is granted to appreciate exceptional or distinguished service to the nation in various positions and responsibilities.

It is issued by the president at the suggestion of the president’s National Honours and Awards Committee.

“Today, I have conferred upon our world-beating athlete Faith Kipyegon the status of Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart, the highest honour our country awards its citizens who illuminate the path of excellence,” said President William Ruto.

“She has earned her place at the very top from running bare feet to breaking two world records within a year is the ultimate state of heroism”.
Kipyegon received the award just hours after World Athletics named her the Female World Athlete of the Year in track events.

Earlier this year, the athlete set two world records in a week.

On June 2, she set the 1,500m world record in Florence, clocking 3:49:11, shattering Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba’s record of 3:50:07.

She also broke the 5000m world mark with a time of 14:05:20 at the Paris Diamond League, just eight days after breaking the 1500m record.
