Kenya is set to participate in the 2023 International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
A team representing the East African nation arrived in Switzerland on Sunday evening led by Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, Mr. Eliud Owalo.
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is a United Nations specialized agency founded in 1865 to coordinate global operations of telecommunications networks and services and further develop global communications technology as an unbiased, international organization.
Governments and the commercial sector must collaborate within the ITU for individual national good and collective global benefit.
Global agreements on the operation and regulation of the radio communications sector (ITU-R), also known as (BR), standardization of the telecommunications sector (ITU-T), also known as (TSB), and regulation of the telecommunications development sector (ITU-D), also known as (BDT) are critical areas of concern.
Kenya is one of the 193-member entity’s elected 40 ITU council member states, in addition to membership by private firms, academics, and international and regional organizations.
Today Mr Owalo will attend a day-long closed-door meeting of fellow global ministers in charge of ICT with the ITU Secretary-General, Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, and council members.
Later, on Tuesday, July 11, he will issue a high-level panel statement on behalf of the Kenya Government on meaningful universal digital connectivity and access.
He is also scheduled to meet specific country delegations of special interest to Kenya and explore spaces and possibilities for symbiotic cooperation with them.
