Kenyan Member of Parliament Babu Owino has threatened to quit Twitter after the US-based company verified a parody account in his name.

The Embakasi MP told Twitter to verify his legitimate account in the next few weeks, a failure to which he will leave the platform.

“If Twitter won’t verify my real account within the next few weeks then I’m sorry I will exit Twitter. Can’t/won’t settle for less at all @verified,” he tweeted.

The outspoken legislator’s account has 177k followers, and the account in question has at least 38k followers. Babu joined Twitter in 2014, and the parody account states 2017.

He had asked his supporters to ignore the parody account, saying it is run by unknown individuals after destroying his reputation.

“Fellow Kenyans please IGNORE the FAKE ACCOUNT verified by TWITTER under the name @Babu Owino1 or @HEBabuOwino_ The perpetrators want to soil my otherwise good name. My OFFICIAL TWITTER ACCOUNT is @HEBabuOwino without UNDERSCORE,” he stated.

Kenyans have questioned the guidelines Twitter used to verify the fake account.

Twitter is yet to respond to the MP’s sentiments.
