Kenyan Member of Parliament Ken Chonga and three others were granted a bond of Ksh100,000 ($702) with the option of Ksh50,000 ($351) cash bail on Monday.

The Kilifi South MP, together with Kilifi Speaker Teddy Mwambire, his assistant Victor Katana, and Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo’s aide Patrick Charo, spent the weekend in detention after a Magistrate Court postponed a decision on their bond application until Monday.

The four are charged with engaging in an unlawful assembly in violation of Section 78(1) as read with Section 79 of the criminal code, Chapter 63 of Kenyan laws.

They were arrested on Wednesday during anti-government protests in Mtwapa, Kilifi South, Kenya’s coast.

The case will be mentioned on August 8, 2023.
