A Kenyan politician has been charged with obtaining funds under false pretences related to the gold and mercury trade.
Simon Ekai Ewoi, who appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo, faced four counts of obtaining money under false pretences.
The court heard that the accused and his accomplices obtained a total sum of Ksh24,263,780 ($183000) from the four complaints by falsely pretending that he could partner with them in the gold and mercury trade.
The accused pleaded not guilty to all counts, with the prosecution opposing his immediate release on bail pending investigations.
In his ruling, the trial magistrate ordered the Turkana County detained for fourteen days at the Central Police Station to allow detectives to complete their investigation.
The court directed that he be produced in court on April 8, 2024, where he would be released on a Ksh7 million ($53000) bond with a surety of a similar amount.
He will also provide two guarantors with clear details of their residences.
