Kenyan Senator Jackson Mandago Spends Night Behind Bars

Text Size:

Kenyan Senator Jackson Mandago on Wednesday spent the night in custody after being arrested by detectives over the Finland scholarship scandal.

The Uasin Gishu senator was arrested alongside two top County officials, Joshua Lelei and Mishack Rono, over the scam, where parents lost billions of Kenyan shillings.

A fourth suspect Joseph Maritim is believed to have sneaked out of the country at the height of the investigation.

Earlier, the trio had failed to appear in court to face charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and abuse of office, among other charges, prompting a warrant of arrest to be issued for their immediate arrest.

Thereafter, the Financial Investigations Unit detectives launched a manhunt for the three. They engaged them in cat-and-mouse games before the suspects opted to surrender when they ran out of ideas.

They are accused of plotting to steal Ksh1 billion ($6.9 million) from an account held at the Kenya Commercial Bank in Eldoret and designated for university fees abroad for students enrolled in the Uasin Gishu County Abroad Education Programme.

The cancelled Finland and Canada scholarship program has caused uproar and considerable protests in Uasin Gishu, with hundreds of graduates being impacted and their parents marching to the streets to seek reimbursements from the county administration.
