The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs has raised alarm over increasing cases of Kenyans falling victim to fraud schemes involving fake visas and fraudulent job offers abroad.
This comes amidst numerous complaints from citizens defrauded during the visa application process.
In a statement issued by the Ministry, Kenyans are urged to exercise caution and apply for visas only through the official websites of the respective destination countries. The Ministry emphasized that visa applications are a personal responsibility that does not necessitate the approval of agents or third-party organizations.
Additionally, the Ministry advised those seeking overseas employment to perform due diligence before proceeding with any travel arrangements. This step, according to the statement, is crucial in avoiding exploitation and disappointment.
“It is important that persons seeking to travel to different destinations apply for the correct visas as provided on the official websites of the respective countries. Visa application is a personal responsibility that does not require the approval of agents or organizations,” read the statement in part.
The Ministry also reminded citizens that overstaying a visa is a serious immigration offence. Those caught can face severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, or deportation, depending on the laws of the respective country.
To support Kenyans in verifying the legitimacy of job offers and travel arrangements, the Ministry reassured that all 67 Kenyan Missions abroad are available to assist with conducting due diligence.
Kenyans are encouraged to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to relevant authorities as the government continues its efforts to protect citizens from fraudsters exploiting the travel and job market.
