Catholic media managers have been asked to promote climate change adaptation efforts to effectively communicate climate change issues.
Media Council of Kenya (MCK) CEO David Omwoyo told Catholic Media Managers at a training forum that a skilled communicator should have a working knowledge of practically every issue.
“Currently, the world is speaking about climate change. It is important to have a basic working knowledge on matters of climate change to educate the public,” he said.
He went on to say that knowing climate change processes help individuals come up with successful adaptation strategies and comprehend and deal with the effects of global warming.

“There is need to embrace technology, read and research to understand climate change. This will empower your audiences with the knowledge needed to act as agents of change”, added Omwoyo.
According to Dr. Cromwel Busolo, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, human activities have caused global warming, which has resulted in climate change, the most severe threat to mankind today.
He stated that merely limiting climate change would not be enough, but that adaptation to inescapable consequences and behavioural changes that promote a climate-friendly lifestyle will be required.
“Without action today, adaptation will be costlier and more difficult for the next generations. Successful adaptation actions not only depend on governments but also on the active and sustained engagement of stakeholders”, said Mr Busolo.
Leo Mutisya, MCK Manager Research Planning and Strategy, informed Catholic Media Communicators on the need to participate in climate change debates to bring attention to local adaptation, which will stimulate successful activities.
“Engaging with local communities through local radio stations on climate change adaptation is vital in imparting knowledge to the community and stirring adaptation actions”, he said.
