The late Kenyan liberation warrior Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi’s widow Mukami Kimathi has died aged 96.

Mukami died on Thursday night at a Nairobi hospital where she was receiving treatment.

Her death was confirmed by her daughter Evelyn Kimathi Wangui. She said her mother was rushed to the hospital after developing breathing complications.

During Kenya’s independence struggle, Mukami was one of the Mau Mau liberation fighters imprisoned at the Kamiti Maximum Prison.

She was a key figure in the campaign that led to Kenya’s independence from colonialists.

Mukami will be remembered for pressing the government to find her husband’s body, which is buried in an unmarked grave at Kamiti Maximum Prison in Central Kenya, and give him a hero’s burial at their Njambini home.
