The human trafficking investigations in Kenya received a boost following the launch of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) launched the SOP on Monday.
The SOPs aim to support and guide law enforcement officers and prosecutors in conducting professional investigations and prosecutions on trafficking in persons.
According to the ODPP, it will ensure standardization of the investigation and prosecution process when dealing with trafficking cases in person in a professional way and a timely, coordinated, and effective response to cases of trafficking in person.
The SPP, Dorcas Oduor, secretary of the public prosecution, while delivering a speech on behalf of the DPP, said that in addition to the SOPs, the ODPP will continue to encourage inter-agency coordination and cooperation, cross-border cooperation, and innovative strategies such as the prosecution guide investigation, capacity building of stakeholders, and sensitization of the communities.
“The development of the SOPs was informed by a needs assessment conducted by the ODPP and DCI, which established that there was an apparent lack of capacity of the agencies handling trafficking in person cases,” said ODPP.
They have been developed in line with the provisions of the United Nations Convention on Transnational Organized Crime and the Counter Trafficking in Persons Act 2011.
“The SOPs were developed with the support of UNODC and Civipol in the framework of the Better Migration Framework.
