The Kerugoya Central Constituency Development Fund (CDF) office was torched on Monday by suspected criminal elements amid nationwide protests held to mark the 35th anniversary of Saba Saba Day, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has confirmed.

In a press statement released Monday evening, the Commission reported that the CDF office in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County, Central Kenya, was set on fire during a wave of unrest that gripped several parts of the country.

The incident occurred as tensions escalated between protesters and police forces, who had erected major roadblocks across the country in an attempt to contain the demonstrations.

The KNCHR stated that looting was reported in at least six counties and noted that the Kerugoya CDF office was among the public properties targeted during the day-long protests.

“Looting incidents were reported in six counties, and the Kerugoya Central CDF office was set ablaze by suspected criminal elements,” read the Commission’s statement.

The protests, which were sparked by growing public frustration over the high cost of living, alleged police brutality, and demands for governance reforms, saw transport and business activities come to a halt in major towns across Kenya. The KNCHR documented 10 deaths, 29 injuries, and 37 arrests across 17 counties by Monday evening.

The Commission also raised serious concerns about the presence of hooded gangs armed with crude weapons operating alongside police officers in parts of the country, including Nairobi and Eldoret.
